What to Expect & Tailored Recovery

Stage 01 • Consultation

Before you arrive

A consultation and a patch test are completed (minimum 48hrs prior). We review your medical history and tailor settings around your diary, downtime tolerance, and individual skin goals.

Stage 02 • Treatment

During Treatment

Topical anaesthetic is applied to optimise comfort. The precision Er:YAG laser removes controlled micro-layers of skin, stimulating tissue renewal and collagen remodelling with minimal thermal spread.

Stage 03 • Recovery

Downtime & Aftercare

Day 1–2: Redness, warmth & mild swelling (often like strong sunburn).
Day 3–7: Dryness, flaking/peeling as skin renews.
Following weeks: Texture continues to refine.

Clinical Indications

What can Smart Juvium laser resurfacing help with?

Smart Juvium Er:YAG resurfacing may be suitable for concerns including:

We’ll assess your skin properly to see whether resurfacing is appropriate—or whether another approach would be safer or more predictable.

Erbium (Er:YAG) resurfacing vs CO2 laser resurfacing

CO2 laser resurfacing is well-known, but it often comes with significant downtime—one of the main reasons many patients delay or avoid treatment.

Smart Juvium is an Er:YAG (Erbium) resurfacing laser. Both CO2 and Er:YAG are “ablative” resurfacing technologies, meaning they work by removing controlled micro-layers of skin to support renewal and collagen remodelling. The key difference is how the energy interacts with tissue:

Er:YAG resurfacing

Er:YAG resurfacing is absorbed by water in the skin and can allow very precise resurfacing with a more controlled recovery profile.

CO2 laser resurfacing

CO2 resurfacing is typically associated with more thermal effect (heat) and can mean longer recovery for some patients.

Downtime and recovery (tailored to you)

Downtime varies depending on how intensive the resurfacing is and what you’re treating. At KLA Medical Clinic, we plan treatment around your diary and your desired balance between results and recovery time.

Typical downtime range: 1 to 7 days (variable)

What recovery can look like:

Day 1–2

redness, warmth, mild swelling (often described like a strong sunburn)

Day 3–7

dryness, flaking/peeling, sensitivity as the skin renews

Following weeks

Skin texture continues to refine

You’ll be given clear aftercare instructions. Sun protection and avoidance are essential after resurfacing.

Possible side effects and risks can include:

  • redness, swelling, discomfort
  • prolonged sensitivity or redness
  • infection (including cold sore reactivation)
  • post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation
  • delayed healing
  • scarring (uncommon, but possible)

We reduce risk through appropriate patient selection, conservative planning when needed, clinician-delivered treatment, and structured aftercare.

Frequently Asked questions

Patients choose us because they want resurfacing done properly—medically governed, carefully planned, and with aftercare they can rely on.

What to expect:

  • A consultation and a patch test (minimum 48hrs prior)
  • Clear discussion of downtime options (1–7 days)
  • Clinician-led treatment in a CQC-registered medical clinic
  • Professional aftercare guidance and follow-up

We do not offer CO2 laser resurfacing at KLA Medical Clinic. We offer Smart Juvium Er:YAG (Erbium) laser resurfacing, which many patients choose specifically because they want a more controlled downtime profile while still pursuing meaningful resurfacing outcomes.

Effectiveness depends on the concern being treated, your skin type, and how intensively the treatment is performed. CO2 and Er:YAG are both ablative resurfacing options, but they behave differently in skin and may suit different patients. The right choice is the one that matches your goals and downtime tolerance safely.

With Smart Juvium Er:YAG, downtime is variable and typically planned within a 1–7 day range. Your exact recovery depends on treatment depth, area treated and individual healing.

It can improve certain acne scars, but outcomes depend heavily on scar type and depth. In some cases, resurfacing is combined with other treatments for a more complete plan. We’ll advise after assessing your scars in person.

Perioral lines can respond well to resurfacing in selected patients. We’ll assess the area, discuss expected improvement (not perfection), and plan settings around your downtime window.

Initial improvements are often noticed as the skin heals, with continued refinement over the following weeks as collagen remodelling progresses. Individual results vary.
